Matthew Falconer for Orange County Mayor Endorses Marco Rubio
It is well known politicians running for office normally do not endorse other candidates. The reason is you do not gain votes and tend to gain opposition. But these times require leaders speak openly.
I am proud to endorse Marco Rubio for the United States Senate. I make this statement not for my own political gain, but to let my thousands of supporters know where I stand.
I have met the Governor and Marco on many occasions. Both are pleasant and gracious people. My reason for endorsing Marco is because he is much more consistent with the principles I hold dear. Marco fought hard to reform our broken tax system. Marco is not afraid to take up unpopular causes if he knows they are good for the people.
On the other hand Charlie Crist is a political weather vane. His policy is driven by the polls. He pushed a state run insurance solution that has put our state's future in jeopardy. He vetoed a measure last session presented by his own party that would have increased competition in our insurance industry. Charlie Crist's recent budget proposal is sheer fantasy. We have a $3 billion deficit, and he wants to cut taxes by $1.1 billion, and raise spending by $800 million. He has gone through $7 billion in reserves the last three years.
But more than anything I object to his promoting and signing the Florida Rail Enterprise Act. It is the largest expansion of government in Florida's modern history. At completion, the rail systems may cost $100 billion and lose billions each year. Last year we cut education funding by $500 million. This year the state will spend $534 million on Sun Rail.
Marco Rubio, like most house members, was an early supporter of Sun Rail. But he had the courage to step out of line and say now is not the time for this project. Charlie Crist fully supports increasing our national debt to build high speed rail to nowhere. I do not.
I think you get my point. We need leaders at all levels of government with common sense. The actions of our government and my opponents have resulted in Florida going from the number one economy in the United States to number 47. It is time for new leadership in Orange County and the United States Senate.
I hope to have your support, and I endorse Marco Rubio for the United States Senate.
